These days, every opportunity for creatives in East Africa is worth its weight in gold- and that rings especially true for the 3rd Annual East African Photography Award. The competition, run by the Uganda Press Photo Award, is open to all photographers within the region, that means citizens of citizens of Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

They want to highlight the work of the region’s best image takers, to elevate the art form on a local level and promote the growth of the industry here within East Africa. To that end, the call for submissions ends on August 1st, 2020 and while you might not win, us at the EA Scene will cry ourselves to sleep if you don’t apply (we all know you’ve been staring into the void of your laptop from 94 straight days, so you might as well put that energy to good use.)

This part is crucial: don’t try to go through different channels with what could have been the winner-all submissions must be done online through the contest’s Visura link. More guidelines, terms and conditions can be found there as well.

Yes, indeed, there are prizes to be won through the EAPA- but we’re going to let our friends at the Uganda Press Photo Award (UPPA) fill you in a bit further as to the aim of the contest, and what awaits the winner.

The world around us is changing fast, and as creative workers it is our job to understand and keep up with those changes. Cultural, socio-political, environmental and technological issues affect individuals and societies and the way we live, and the old collides with the new at every turn. We are excited to see stories that show the region and its people and cultures in a new light. This  opportunity is open to any story that has been worked on in the period of the last two years, starting in September 2018 up until the 2020 deadline, and is an opportunity to share our  varied perspectives and showcase our different and individual identities as East Africans.

The winner of the competition will receive a Canon EOS RP with a 24-105mm lens and a lens adapter sponsored by Canon Central and North Africa and her or his work will be exhibited for one month during the winners’ exhibition later this year. She or he will be invited to come to Kampala to participate in the award-giving, the exhibition opening ceremony and the professionals’ week.

Just a quick point of order, not to be redundant, but: the deadline for submissions is August 1st, 2020.

Keep your ears and eyes on the EA Scene for more info, details and highlights around the East African Photography Award within the coming weeks!
